Absolutely! Even if you have never had a garden before, you can get involved and have the help you need to get started. Community Missions has entered into a partnership with “Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work and Play.” Through a 5 year grant awarded to Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County (CCE) by the New York State Department of Health, CCE educators will be working with the residents of Niagara Falls on healthy lifestyle choices to reduce the rates of chronic disease in the city residents. To help support the Gardens of Compassion initiative, the following workshops will be offered in collaboration with Community Missions:

Vegetable Gardening 101/Garden Start Up
 Wednesday, May 8, 2013: 4:00 - 5:30PM
Description:
John Farfaglia, Horticulturist for Cornell Cooperative Extension will present a program on the basics of vegetable gardening especially suited to beginners. Topics to be covered include choosing a gardening site, preparing the soil, choosing the best seed and transplants, planting schedules for the area and how to layout the garden. Participants will also learn about new varieties, proper planting techniques, special tips for raised bed gardens and maintenance practices such as watering, weeding, harvesting and more. Gardeners are encouraged to bring their questions and may also bring a small zip lock bag of soil that will be tested at a later date. Specific questions may be directed to John Farfaglia, 433-8839 x226 or jaf21@cornell.edu

Mid-Summer Care/Maintenance and Garden Fresh Recipe Ideas

Description:
It is important to properly maintain your garden in order to ensure you will get harvestable crops that you may use to create delicious meals! Topics discussed will include proper weeding, harvesting and recipe ideas for meals. A demonstration of how to prepare harvested crops will be given. A recap of proper watering, sunlight and soil will be discussed as well. After finishing this workshop, participants will have recipe ideas to create from crops that they have sustained all season.
Putting Your Harvest on the Table

Description:
It is important to eat healthy foodsin order to be a healthy person! The recently implemented MyPlate by the USDA and benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables will be discussed and explained. Freezing and storing harvested crops will also be discussed. Participants will learn how to properly prepare and cook crops harvested to make a nutritious meal. After completion of this workshop, participants will feel confident that they are knowledgeable about the nutritious benefits of their crops and can create a delicious meal from them.
Fall Garden Clean Up Workshop
 Wednesday, October 9, 2013: 4:00 - 5:30PM
Description:
With the cold air approaching, it is time to clean up your vegetable gardens and prepare your garden for winter. This workshop will provide you with simple steps to begin cleaning up your garden. We will also discuss the importance of rotating crops in your garden in order to prevent disease.
