“Joy That Will Calm The Heart”
(from the liner notes of the CD)

The meaning and power of words and phrases change over the years. New words and phrases also enter into the language all the time. For instance, the word ‘text’ has always been a noun referring to the words of a written document. Today, it has gained the added meaning of something we do—in 140 characters or less. The word ‘text’ has also become a verb!

Some words and phrases, however, seem to hold their meaning throughout the ages. In the Gospel of Luke, when the angel appears to the shepherds to announce the birth of Jesus, we find this phrase in the King James translation of the text: “good tidings of great joy.” The language may be a bit old fashioned, but the meaning still rings true and clear. There is one small thing, however, that many people may not be aware of about this very familiar text.

The Greek word translated as “joy” is χαρά (transliterated in English as chara, pronounced

khar-ah'). People pretty much know what “joy” means in English, but the Greek word chara carries more meaning than our English word “joy.” It carries the idea of “calmness.” The joy that is being spoken of is not just a feeling of delight or great happiness, but also carries with it the sense of a ‘calm delight.’ The “joy” that the angel announces then is “good news” because it will bring both delight and calm in the midst of the turmoil and trials of life. It is, therefore, the kind of joy that will calm the heart!

“Joy that will calm the heart.” That is a good phrase to describe what Community Missions strives to do every day—provide assistance for those who are in the midst of turmoil and trials because they are homeless, need food and clothing, or are struggling with mental illness. The Mission helps restore

stability and calmness so that Joy can once again take hold in troubled hearts.

“Joy that will calm the heart” is also a good phrase to describe what your gift of purchasing of

“Joy 2011” will help provide to our neighbors in need.  Proceeds from the sale of this CD will help the Mission provide emergency food, shelter, and clothing to those in crisis. It will help us provide essential services for those living with mental illness, and for at-risk youth. We also believe that this wonderful music and these heartfelt performances will also bring you a joy that will calm your heart.

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Mark H. Breese

Agency Minister & Director of Ministry and Community Partnerships

Special Thanks!

There is so much that goes into a project like this that there inevitably are some special thanks that are in order. So, thank you to: Gregg Birke of St. Paul Lutheran Church, in North Tonawanda, NY who fearlessly stepped up to be the recording engineer for Revelation and for the Anointed Voices of Praise-- we can truly say that this CD may not have happened without his help; First Baptist Church in Niagara Falls, NY for once again opening their doors for a recording space when there was no room at any of the other inns; Ryan Babcock for the wonderfully artistic cover design; and Michael Depew of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Burt, NY for being so organized with the paper work for such a large choir. And of course thank you to the following churches, organizations, and performers for being being part of the CMI Music Partnership Program for this CD:
